The Best of: Cannes

With the Festival de Cannes about to begin, A-list stars of the silver screen will be flocking to the French Riviera this month. Here’s where they’ll be staying.

Carlton Cannes

Set in an enviable location on La Croisette, the iconic Carlton Cannes, now a Regent Hotel, part of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ luxury and lifestyle portfolio, reopened its doors this spring after an extensive renovation. The hotel, which has been revered by cinema stars, creatives, diplomats and presidents for decades, has been skilfully reimagined by Tristan Auer, famed for his careful-yet-bold approach to heritage buildings. A stunning blend of heritage and modernity, the works have ensured that the legendary Belle Epoque façade and historic features have been breathtakingly preserved. Accommodation is offered in 332 rooms and suites – 72 of which have a seaview – and 37 branded residences. Perhaps most special is the sixth floor Alfred Hitchcock Suite – the exact room where the famous kiss scene between Grace Kelly and Cary Grant in To Catch a Thief was filmed.

Le Hotel Majestic Barrière

Old school service and grown up glamour are the order of the day at this Riviera icon. Dating from 1926, the Majestic has undergone major renovations in the last two decades, evolving to incorporate the most modern ideals of luxury while keeping true to its roots. The hotel’s most sumptuous suites all face directly onto the famous red-carpeted steps of the Palais des Festivals. Each impressive suite is decorated in a distinct style: the fashionably chic Dior; the Riviera, whose nautical theme recalls the spirit of a luxury liner; a set of rooms celebrating cinematic style; and the classy classic, Morgan. The penthouse has its own private rooftop pool with sea view – though scene-stealing swims are on offer wherever you choose to stay here, with the choice of the hotel’s fabulous heated seaside pool, or its private beach. On the subject of R‘n’R, don’t miss The Diane Barrière Spa, known for its excellent massages and marine facials.

Hôtel Martinez

Boasting one of the most famous frontages on La Croisette, Riviera glamour abounds at this art deco masterpiece set on the beachfront in the heart of the Cannes action. Part of Hyatt’s exclusive Unbound Collection, the hotel recently underwent a complete renovation, overseen by legendary interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon. The 409 luxurious bedrooms feature tasteful 1930s-inspired furnishings, and are decorated in a soothing palette of blue and sandy shades, playing on the coastal location. Meanwhile, the entire top floor is split into just two jaw-dropping penthouse suites, each measuring in at a staggering 8,000 sq ft. Guests can make the most of a private beach, complete with beach club, and a sumptuous spa, but perhaps the most famous part of the hotel is the Palme d’Or restaurant, where chef Christian Sinicropi’s exquisite menu has earned two Michelin stars – it is the only restaurant in Cannes to have been awarded this honour.
