Cape Verde
If you want guaranteed sun and pristine beaches, our top pick is the islands of Cape Verde off Africa’s north-west coast. Imagine sapphire seas and miles of white sand to rival the Caribbean, but much closer to home – only a five-and-a-half hour flight from the UK.
When – if – you tire of relaxing on the beach, there are plenty of water sports to try out. If you’re feeling active you can talk a walk on one of the many mountains. Or, in true holiday style, sit back and enjoy a glass of rum in the colonial-era fishing port of Santa Maria. Click here for more information on Cape Verde.
A last-minute trip to Cape Verde in September is very easy on the pocket, with an all-inclusive package costing as little as £779.
Lanzarote
Another sun-soaked destination for a September holiday is the Canary Islands, located close to the Moroccan coast but with a character all of their own. Lanzarote is a particular favourite. Most resorts are located near the white-sand beaches of Playa Blanca and Playa del Carmen. These get busy during peak tourist season but the crowds thin significantly by September.
We recommend taking a couple of day trips to the north of the island. The dark volcanic landscape forms a striking contrast with the whitewashed towns and clear blue sea. The area around Timanfaya National Park is particularly striking.
Renting an apartment for a week in September costs as little as £383 for a bed-and-breakfast deal.
Mexico
If you plan on travelling further afield, we recommend a visit to Mexico, a diverse country of stunning beaches, luscious rainforests and fascinating Aztec ruins – and let’s not forget the food. As well as quesadillas and guacamole, Mexican food is intricately spiced and so richly steeped in tradition it’s been given a UNESCO designation.
You can spend 14 nights in Playa del Carmen, a beach resort of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, for only £872 including flights (bed-and-breakfast deal). You’ll be staying at HM Playa del Carmen, which has two swimming pools and is close to the beach. For a small supplement they offer some fabulous excursions, including horseriding at sunset and a visit to the Mayan ruins of Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Sorrento, Italy
If you want a holiday that combines culture, great food and time on the beach, Sorrento is one of our top choices. This picturesque Italian resort town of pastel-coloured houses and shaded piazzas is located on Italy’s Amalfi coast. Cala Mitigliano, just eight miles from Sorrento, is the region’s most beautiful beach – and in September, it will still be warm enough for a swim in the sea.
We recommend taking time to saunter down the cobbled streets of the town’s historic centre, exploring the palaces, churches and museums – the 14th-century St Francis’ Cloister, for example, is spectacular. If you’re interested in culture, there are some fascinating archaeological sites located nearby. The most famous is Pompeii, a thriving city buried under after a volcanic eruption in 79AD, which has now been excavated.
You can stay in a hotel near Sorrento for as little £668 per person all inclusive.
Santorini, Greece
If it’s a romantic break you’re looking for, we recommend Santorini. This sun-kissed Greek island of clear blue skies and whitewashed houses is one of the world’s most well-known honeymoon destinations. As September sees less tourists than the summer months, you’ll be able to relax in each other’s company. We recommend plenty of sunset strolls and romantic dinners for two.
One of the most romantic spots is the town of Oia, with its ocean views, distinctive white houses and blue-domed churches. For a more offbeat outing, we recommend visiting the healing natural hot springs of Nea Kameni.
The perfect couple’s break is yours for as little as £493 for seven nights’ bed and breakfast.
