Gatsby Glitz

Baz Luhrmann’s remake of The Great Gatsby opened the Cannes Film Festival this week and divided reviewers. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw named the adaptation “fantastically unthinking and heavy-handed” – ouch! But even the meanest of movie critics can’t deny that the picture isn’t visually stunning. Set on the Gold Coast of Long Island, New York, the film’s lavish sets certainly do justice to F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic Jazz Age tale of desire, love and aspiration. And talking of aspiration, we’d quite like to take a little piece of 1920s frivolity and glamour home with us. Just as the sartorial world is all aflutter for Daisy Buchanan and co (see fashion’s obsession du jour, Carey Mulligan currently topping best dressed lists across the globe), interiors are enjoying a Gatsby moment too and Art Deco style is everywhere.

King’s Road’s Charles Edwards are into the swing of things with a range of Gatsby-era lighting that hits the spot. Dripping in elegance, this Round Stepped Deco ceiling light (from £3,840)wouldn’t look out of place in Jay Gatsby’s fabulous West Egg mansion.

The Chandelier & Mirror Company have Art Deco wares aplenty and specialise in all things cinematically glitz. This chic, frameless, Giancaxio fan mirror (£240) has Gatsby decadence written all over it with its classic, geometric sunburst design.

This has just dropped into our inboxes and straight into our hearts: launching this summer is an exquisite, limited edition Ebony Pearl Jewellery Box from Linley (£9,000). We think it’s both Gatsby and great.

And for those debauched, post-dinner party discussions, Gatsby style, modern-day pleasure seekers will love Mondital’s unapologetically extravagant and super-luxe Silvy chaise longue. (Made to buyer’s specification).

Hedonism has never looked so good!
