Exciting news for fans of Pick & Cheese and The Cheese Bar this month: founder Mathew Carver will finally be launching his new restaurant, The Cheese Barge. Originally scheduled to open in the spring, the double decker barge has spent the last six months self-isolating in Somerset and is now ready to permanently moor on the Grand Union Canal at Paddington Central. Designed by Adam Richards Architects, the boat features a beautiful copper ‘veil’ acting as an awning for the 40 cover lower deck dining room. Championing small producer British cheese, highlights of the menu include Windrush Goats’ Curd with lamb scrumpets and pickled walnuts; Cropwell Bishop Stilton ‘Devils on Horseback’ – medjool dates stuffed with Stilton and wrapped in bacon; and Maida Vale, a washed rind cheese from Village Maid, served on treacle soda bread with smoked mackerel and green sauce. Mathew says: “Our excitement for this project has never waned, and myself and the team couldn’t be more excited to share this INCREDIBLE vessel with everyone. British cheese on a boat, what’s not to love?” Our sentiments exactly.
The Cheese Barge is due to open early this month at Sheldon Square, Paddington Central, W2 (thecheesebar.com/paddington/)
