It’s not often London gets to shine at partying al fresco, but with this weekend promising to be a scorcher, we’ll be heading east to Shoreditch High Street for Urban Food Fest’s Mexicana-themed shindig, in honour of Cinco de Mayo. Cinco de Mayo (literally Fifth of May) commemorates an underdog victory for Mexico in battle against the French in 1862. Normally marked as an unmistakably Mexican celebratory riot of colour and joy, the news this week has seen some frankly dubious celebrations that we’d like to put out of our minds asap, before it puts us off our food altogether – but don’t let that deter you. This coolest of gourmet markets has been a perennial on London’s street food scene for some time now, and Saturday will be going full on fiesta, boasting stalls serving the best of Latin American food; tacos, burritos, “extra crispy beef brisket buns” (yes PLEASE) all washed down with lashings of ginger beer, rum and chilli cocktails. But given that it opens at midday, we suggest you go easy on the tequila. ¡Vamos!
Urban Food Fest is free entry, every Saturday from midday to midnight. Euro Car Parks, 162-167 Shoreditch High Street, E1
