If you’re looking for one of the best luxury hotels in Crete for adults, Asterion Suites & Spa offers an experience that feels more like a deep breath than a holiday. Located on the island’s northwestern coast in Pyrgos Psilonerou, near Gerani and just a short drive from Chania, this five-star, adults-only boutique resort is designed for one thing: complete relaxation.

There’s a moment, somewhere between the final sip of plane wine and the soft thud of touchdown in Chania, when everything shifts. Below, the Aegean shimmers like glass with the kind of lustre that feels more celestial than sea. The island seems to rise out of it quilted with olive groves, scattered with whitewashed villages and edged by curling coastline and sandy coves. And just west of it all, nestled quietly in Pyrgos Psilonerou near Gerani, sits Asterion Suites & Spa, a grown-up retreat with absolutely nothing to prove.
The magic begins the moment we land. Yanis from Asterion Suites & Spa is waiting with a smile that says “take your time, you’re here now” to whisk us to our destination. We travel light, so we’re through arrivals and on the road in no time – a perk not to be underestimated when you’ve only just escaped London. The 30-minute transfer is gently cinematic: Crete in full summer bloom, with wild oleanders waving the roads in soft pinks and whites, moody majestic mountains to the left, and flashes of beach to the right. It sets the tone. Untamed, beautiful, and full of promise.
Asterion, named after the mythic King of Crete – part man, part stardust – doesn’t shout its luxury. It doesn’t need to. The hotels buildings are low-slung and golden, softened by olive trees, tall grasses, giant cacti and bright bursts of bougainvillaea. A chilled welcome drink (part citrus, part spell) is pressed into our hands as we check-in, and a light floral breeze carries with it the first real reminder: this is what it feels like to stop.
Asterion Suites & Spa offers an exclusive collection of 67 luxurious Superior Rooms and Suites, each thoughtfully designed to provide the perfect balance of comfort, elegance, and tranquillity. We’re staying in the Universe Panorama Suite and it certainly lives up to its name. A private, peaceful pocket of sky and space suspended just above the world. Inside, sun-washed tones, driftwood-hued furniture, cool stone underfoot, sacred air conditioning, and a bed that all but guarantees cloud-like sleep. A compact kitchen space sits tucked in one corner (though we suspect it’ll go untouched), and the bathroom complete with his-and-hers sinks comes stocked with plush towels, robes and slippers. Outside, a generous terrace opens out to sea and sky, while a curved stone staircase leads to our very own rooftop sanctuary, with its own loungers, shade, and a pool that catches every ray of the Cretan sun. We spend hours up here, doing little more than ordering room service and letting the panoramic views lull us into perfect stillness.

Dinner that evening is at Matter, the hotel’s relaxed main restaurant. Under the charm of Goran, our waiter, we settle into a Cretan feast: slow-cooked lamb, lemon-drenched sea bass, zucchini balls that would make a local yiayia (Greek for grandmother) proud. We sip on a beautiful bottle of chilled Chardonnay as the sun melts away, and a live pianist plays “My Way” further along the terrace which sounds less Sinatra and more lullaby in this setting. We linger, reluctant to leave the moment.
By day two, we’ve found our rhythm. We rise early with the sun for a 6.15am run along the seafront. The breeze is warm, the waves clap the shore in rhythmic applause, and the amber light is all the encouragement we need. We feel (temporarily, at least) like people who’ve mastered the elusive art of balance. Back at Matter, breakfast is its own ritual, and we enjoy recovering here. Thick local Greek yoghurt drizzled with aromatic honey, warm out the oven pastries and bread, fresh figs and freshly squeezed orange juice a plenty.
The rest of the day unfolds without structure. There’s no need for plans, itinerary or to rush. We drift between pool and lounger, down to the softly pebbled sandy beach and back again, and drinks appear at our side Asterion’s Naked Star bar. The sea is bright and clear and beckons with a promise of renewal. We dive, we float, we dry off under the sun and retreat to the shade of straw umbrellas, holiday books in hand. And somewhere around mid-afternoon, we realise that we’ve barely spoken all day – the good kind of silence, the rare and golden that only comes when everything feels just right. This is happiness, distilled.
That evening, we change into linen and silk and head to 35°, Asterions à la carte offering. It’s sophisticated without tipping into formality – all soft lighting, earthy ceramics, and menus that feel rooted in the island’s traditions. Manolis talks us through the menu with genuine enthusiasm, recommending Cretan specialities and crisp local wines. We marvel at the simple beauty of it all – the flavours, the setting, the soft buzz of a summer night. A violinist plays in the background, and we clink glasses like honeymooners, which we are not, but could very easily be.

We venture out just once. A quick word with the concierge for a taxi and fifteen minutes later we’re winding through the hills, bound for a small, family-run winery in the small village of Vouves. It’s quiet when we arrive – sun-dappled and still – and we take our place beneath the shade of a broad tree in the courtyard of the pink-rendered villa. Glasses are poured, stories shared. One rosé, soft and dry, is named after the winemaker’s flame-haired daughter – a detail as charming as the wine itself. But while the wine is exceptional (and a very good price), we hardly stray anymore from Asterion Suites & Spa. Once you’re in its orbit, everything else can wait.
It’s the small touches that linger longest in memory – those seemingly effortless details that quietly elevate a stay from lovely to unforgettable. At Asterion Suites & Spa, it’s the way the staff greet you by name, recall your morning order without prompting (an iced latte, no sugar, with an extra glass of fresh orange juice – naturally), and ask how you are as though it genuinely matters. It’s the scent of wild herbs and sea salt drifting in the air.
Even at full capacity, the hotel never feels busy. There’s plenty of space and guests move through the space like clockwork, yet never in a hurry – each on their own time, their own pace. The atmosphere is one of quiet harmony. Our suite is as idyllic at dawn, with sunlight creeping in over the horizon, as it is late at night when we return from dinner to find a square of rich chocolate left on our pillow, and the terrace lit by stars. We never quite make it to the spa, though we’re told – more than once, and always with reverence – that it’s otherworldly. Next time, we promise ourselves. Though, really, how could there not be a next time?
Crete may be the land of gods, monsters and labyrinths, but Asterion Suites & Spa quietly offers a different kind of myth. Here, there are no battles to win, no monsters to slay, no tasks to complete. Just sun, stillness and the luxury of enough.
