Bottarga, in Chelsea, captures the Mediterranean magic of its sibling, zēphyr, but with a cosy, bistro-inspired vibe that feels utterly unique
Chelsea, meet Bottarga. Nestled in the heart of Chelsea, Bottarga is the latest offering from the Pachamama Group, and it’s already making waves. Opened on 6th November, this new venture captures the Mediterranean magic of its sibling, zēphyr, but with a cosy, bistro-inspired vibe that feels utterly unique.
Step inside, and Bottarga oozes charm. Picture glassware cabinets, an open kitchen bustling with energy, and Dickensian touches like exposed pipework, low lighting, and the warm flicker of real wax candles. The mood? A seamless blend of old and new. House music adds a clubby, modern edge, but the ambiance stays relaxed and timeless.
The sharp, friendly staff are as knowledgeable as they are welcoming, and the menu is a love letter to the Aegean. Anchovies served with Kalamata Gildas are so good that my dining companion claims they have re-booted his brain – he jokes he could march into the UN and broker a trade deal on the spot! Calamari lands on the table in a crispy, golden batter with tender insides, perfectly confident, and paired with a spicy red pepper dip. The aubergine dip brings smoky richness, while the seabass ceviche simply melts in the mouth.
Bottarga’s protein offerings are the ultimate showstoppers. The dry-aged ribeye is a triumph – cooked on charcoal, sliced generously, served with a jus, and boasting marinated depth of flavour with an honesty that’s rare. For lamb lovers, the belly is something else entirely: unctuous, fatty, and rich, it surpasses even the finest pork belly. Don’t miss the potatoes, confited to buttery perfection and finished with a whisper of brown butter decadence.
Pair it all with a wine list celebrating Mediterranean varietals and European classics, and you’ve got a dining experience that hits all the right notes. Bistro charm, clubby vibes, and a menu packed with flavourful confidence – Bottarga is a must-visit.
