Almine Rech presents Course, an exhibition of recent work by London-based artist Peter Peri, and his fourth at this particular Mayfair art space.
And we can expect a visual feast: think candy-striped beams that radiate around quadrilateral shapes; geometric landscapes, hand drawn and coloured with aerosol paint and flecks of ink. But there’s a creeping sense of menace behind the rainbow stripes: Peri’s large scale Super Topology (2019) is said to be like riding a carousel at a haunted, Victorian-style fun fair, whirling into the dark. The artist’s earlier work recalls classic horror novels and it’s clear to see he’s no stranger to the dark side, here.
“Peri’s paintings, such as The Call (2005), referenced Lovecraft’s ‘Cthulhu mythos’: a cycle of stories about a Leviathan-like creature who rises from the depths of time to torment humanity. Peri’s spiralling compositions remind me of Lovecraftian narrative arcs: the writer’s monstrous ‘circling’ around a cold space. They synthesise a vortex and pull you into the centre.”
The gallery will be open by appointment only and for the safety of visitors and staff, masks must be worn by all visitors upon entrance.
